Sleep Note

Authored

Ok I think week note one was actually quite a good week note, if I do say so myself – toot toot (that was the sound of me blowing my own horn). This week may be a lesser update. I've mostly been focused on renewed anxiety and not sleeping.

  • The carnage of last week isn't resolved yet. It did get worse though. The main light in the bathroom started flashing on and off rapidly. Along with the massive pointy screws and holes in the wall, where the mirror once was, it was a bit of a horror show. We had to put some fairy lights in there instead.
  • You might be thinking that gentle, heart shaped fairy lighting in the bathroom would feel like pooping in an enchanted woodland but you would be wrong dear reader.
  • At least I learnt all about fluorescent lighting, the starter, the ballast, etc. Turns out the bulb just needed replacing.
  • At work I attended a Let's Talk About Race round table, organised by FT Embrace. Beforehand I was a little nervous, and not quite sure what to expect, but actually the format was pretty great. Our host would talk on a topic, we'd split into a smaller group to discuss, and then return to the broader group to share via text based chat. It was a good opportunity to identify racism at the FT; share successes between groups, such as changes to recruitment; and get used to talking about race with a random group of colleagues from across the business.
  • I dusted off and reread my copy of Clean Code by Robert Martin (a.k.a Uncle Bob). There's plenty of good advice in there. Although it's a bit absolutist, and I don't need to know about JUnit internals. I decided to checkout Robert's blog and Twitter. I know they're tech famous but haven't paid much attention. Let's just say yikes! And yikes again! Clean Code isn't making it back on my bookshelf.
  • There's a space on my bookshelf, if anyone has any recommendations for me?
  • Ok, there are actually two spaces on my bookshelf but one is for Legends Of The Leaf by Jane Perrone. If you're a fan of house plants you might be interested too. Jane also hosts the excellent On The Ledge podcast.
  • Otherwise I've mostly been doom scrolling and vegetating this week. The spoils of past Lee have come good though. We've been enjoying fermented aubergine, the recipe for which is from The Cultured Club. It sounds gross but I heartily recommend (sauerkraut sounds gross too if you call it fermented cabbage). It's particularly good with tortellini or in a roast mediterranean veg, couscous situation.
  • There's not going to be any fermented aubergine this evening though. I'm off to enjoy a whatever-is-in-the-freezer-wrap. 🙌
  • Byeee.
