Meek Note

Authored

All the cool kids are writing week notes. I thought I'd give it a go too. Other week notes out there are personal, funny, and informative – way better to follow than a Twitter stream – but I can't promise mine will be any of those things, dear reader.

  • Today in working-from-home distractions: three to four massive f***ing screws burst through our wall and destroyed a large built in mirror and its lights. Our neighbour is renovating their bathroom, and I guess we are now too.
  • Having to go and speak to strangers about the carnage they've unknowingly wrought, and arrange amends, wasn't my plan for this evening... excuse me not to be a bother but...
  • It would be much easier to deal with without having to get a tenancy agency involved. Yuk.
  • In other news I attended a webinar at work called The Virtual Communicator. There were a lot of good tips. I'm particularly keen to reintroduce more body language by being further from the camera, or maybe even standing; and to work on talking with more clarity and pace. I haven't listened yet but our host, Nick Trumble, has spoken on the subject in an inrehearsal podcast episode.
  • What else happened this week? Time is one now. Happy 202nd day of March!
  • I reread this article by Rachel Andrew. It's really useful to understand CSS formatting contexts, through the lens of new display values. For example to understand what display: inline-block is all about, or what affect setting display: flex on a CSS grid item will have.
  • Harassers are nice to me, and probably to you by Sarah Milstein was also a stand-out read for me this week. Sarah discusses what harassment looks like, how with more power it can become harder to identify, and what the leaders in our organizations can do to become aware of harassment.
  • I'm finding it hard to concentrate on writing because Monty Don is talking about wild flowers in the background.
  • I love Monty Don.
  • Last Saturday I made a right mess. I got compost all over my dining area, living area, home office, and potting shed (they're all the same place). One day I will have outside space 🌱 ❤️️
  • There has been a lot of time to watch the house plants reward my efforts with new foliage since I've had a hard time sleeping this week. If you found some crispy garlic on the hob whilst making 2am toast would you eat it? Yeah, same!
  • Anyhow, I'm home alone this evening for maybe the second time since March. What will I do with this new freedom? Watch Lord of The Rings again, woop woop 🙌
  • Until next time.
