Stilted Note

  • More people are writing weeknotes and I love it. I'm following Alice, Edd, Simon, Rowan, James, and Rhys' so called boring birds. My RSS reader of choice is Feedly.
  • We watched Daniel Kitson this week. He's touring empty theatres with a new, live-streamed show: Dot. Dot. Dot. I don't know if I can describe his shows but they're so good. In this show Daniel recounts his pandemic experience thus far. The tone is spot on. We laughed aplenty and were left feeling good but there was no sugar coating how devastating the pandemic has been. You'll want to signup to his mailing list to get tickets. They sell fast.
  • /// Oh hold on, Nigella Lawson is telling me on TV I can eat banana peel. In curry. Tell me more Nigella.
  • What else this week?
  • At work a panel discussion "overcoming imposter syndrome". Thank you for sharing everyone involved 🙇‍♂️ I like to think that I don't suffer imposter syndrome but that's not quite true judging by chest tightening, teeth gnashing anxiety hearing other people's experience. It's somehow difficult to admit, but I think I try to bury feelings which logically I believe are unhelpful.
  • Also at work this week, Engine Room, our internal conference. Much praise for everyone involved in organising it. The shift to an online event went well, in fact I engaged much more this year than previously. In particular I enjoyed the open spaces. People were invited to host a conversation on a topic they care about and attendees could choose which open spaces to partake in. It was excellent to see and hear from people who I haven't interacted with much since shifting to working from home.
  • Prior to open spaces there were two tracks of talks. I delivered a talk for one of the tracks. On watching back I found that I erm-ed tremendously. Tremendously! There was also some of that upward inflection at the end of statements sprinkled in, as if I was asking a lot of questions. I was a little nervous. It's been a while since I've spoken to that many people at once. Note to self: you erm and um when you're nervous, don't do that silly. It went ok though, I'd like to do it again. Thanks for listening those who were able to attend. I hope you found it interesting and/or useful. 🙌
  • Half way through Engine Room I popped to our local bakery for a pastry and pretended it was a free intermission snack 😁🥐☕️ Post conference Google Meet drinks were also fun. It's been too long since I've hung-out with lovely work people at the Virtual Sea Horse.
  • I have a new mantra this week. It goes: "You don't need a new phone yet. You don't need a new phone yet. You don't need a new phone yet." I'm holding on to my 6S for another year, it's working just fine, but the 12 mini is mightily alluring.
  • That's all folks. Miss your face (unless I've never seen it). Byeeeee.
