Marimo Note

Authored

This week I've unintentionally learnt about Marimo moss balls (actually, algae balls) from two different angles. The Green Planet, which is absolutely incredible, and the first few pages of Legends of the Leaf which I finally picked up.

I think I had some Marimo at one point. I used to be pretty into tropical aquariums. Though I'm always tempted to get one again, I'm now much more conflicted about keeping fish.

A 3 foot tropical aquarium, vibrant and alive, with various species of plants and colourful fish.
One of my old aquariums, circa 2009.

Anyhow, I gather that Hokkaidō, Japan has a Marimo mascot called Marimokkori.

I'll let Wikipedia fill in the gaps: Marimo is the word for the green algae clusters that grow in some of Hokkaidō's lakes, while mokkori, literally "bulge", is a Japanese slang term for an erectionMarimokkori on Wikipedia.

Marimokkori, people! Marimokkori! There are even dolls. Anyway I thought you'd like to know about this wildly inappropriate yet hilarious moss ball mascot.

I'm still not doing weeknotes right now.

Goodbye forever,
Lee
