  • I'm growing my beard a little longer and need to buy some grooming products, a fancy brush, some nice scissors. I've shopped around this week and can't decide. A little beard care set would make a good christmas gift, and I'm difficult to buy for, but I don't think I can wait. I'll buy a nice set for myself, now – see this is why I'm hard to buy for.
  • The other week my barber gave my beard a shampoo, a brush, and then trimmed it into shape. It looked and felt so much better than before!
  • A beard shampoo and brush feels like a weird thing to pay for. I'm not entirely comfortable having someone so close to my face. It was good though and I'm much happier with the result than my previous barber. Usually my tactic for finding a barbers is to pick a cheap one that looks just the right amount of shabby and stick with it until I move far enough away that I really can't keep going back. This time I've swallowed my social anxieties to try a few places and I think being a fickle customer has paid off.
  • So I bought a personal Macbook. I've been holding out for the new Macbook Pro announcement but now they've arrived can't bring myself to part with so much money, or wait for the major Air redesign expected next year. Instead I bought a used Air from cex. I'm super happy with it.

  • It seems almost completely brand new with only 2 battery cycles. I went for the only 16GB RAM model they had, which also came with 500GB storage. I'll have to find an excuse to install some VMs because really I don't think I need the extras in hindsight, this machine is incredible.
  • R's take on my Air vs. the fancy new Pros: "I could probably get a better boyfriend but it doesn’t mean I don’t enjoy you". Fair.
  • I feel pretty good about saving ~£300 on the usual retail price, and ~£700 by resisting my filthy desires for a Pro machine. £700 is enough money for me to quit my job and do nothing but joyously sit on my arse tang ping for an entire month.
  • To go with the Air I'm getting an external monitor too. They're difficult and expensive to get hold of with the supply chain issues at the moment. I talked myself down from an all singing, all dancing, 4K 27" model and have a refurbished WQHD 25" model on order instead.
  • Do I get an award for my restraint and hardship?
  • If you're in the market for a monitor keep in mind MacOS doesn't scale to 4K as well around 27"; WQHD, 5K, or a larger display is probably the way to go.

I guess I've got everything now
