Cinematic Note

  • TikToker wins 'lumpy' oat milk war with Lidl. Congratulations! What did they do? Request a refund and harness the power of social media to hold a supermarket to account. What did I do? Gag down a couple of cartons of grossness then quietly vow not to buy another. Waste not want not! So meek though.
  • Hot tip, Lidl actually sell Minor Figures at the moment for a decent price (£1.39). It's way nicer in coffee than home-brands and cheaper than Oatly barista edition.
  • I felt pretty ill last week all of a sudden and tried to work through it only to back out half way through the day to take the afternoon off sick. The following day I felt a lot better and was back at work. The moral of this story is: don't be an idiot, rest when you need to.
  • Work otherwise? I've been experimenting with the Figma Plugin API to generate UI libraries from design tokens. I'm thinking with generated libraries we could keep design and engineering teams in sync, and quickly create UI libraries for new brands and mode combinations (dark mode, high contrast mode), which our design teams could swap out as needed. There're existing plugins which go the other way around but Figma doesn't seem an ideal place to author large numbers of design tokens, including more abstract things like easing functions for animation, and the workflow to review changes with Figma as the source of tokens can get tricky too, and. Well. Anyway. This weeknote is heading off track, I really should write a separate blog post. Just to say there's lots more to do, and lots of people to consult, but it's looking more and more feasible that we can get to a future where design decisions and the terminology to describe them are shared across teams and platforms (design tooling, web, native, etc) and that's pretty exciting for lots of reasons.
  • Here's a treat to apologise to anyone not interested in the last massive bullet: This bowls shot (YouTube) is epic – epic.
  • Also this week, we celebrated our anniversary belatedly by going to Maveli, a south Indian restaurant which we found does a most excellent parotta – so crispy and soft and *mouth waters*. After Maveli we headed out-out to a bar for the first time in a long time and I discovered how old I am.
  • That's not all! We also watched Bond, James Bond. Don't worry, no plot spoilers here: there's a scene in Hammersmith which features some excellent pubs in the background and in the foreground... a certain well regarded newspaper. It's fun being in the exact spot during the boat race whilst shouting "go on Oxbridge!" with excitable indifference.
  • Where are the weeks going? I'm intending to write some kind of year-in-review weeknote but here we are at week 55 already.
