Office Note
Authored
This week, in the life of Lee*.
- R's sister and partner were on a quiz show! I was excited, they did well, but the format was so sedate I aged by 50 years.
- R's mum reads some of these! On an unrelated note, I continue to be a model partner. π
- Matt left the FT which is sad. We didn't get to work together too much, I would have liked to more.
- With Matt gone I can start wearing clothes with little animals on the breast, without feeling like a copy-cat. Every cloud. π
- I attended a career workshop to see if that would help me shed gnawing existential career woes. One exercise had us graph our career with time on the x axis and contentedness on the y. It's an interesting visualisation, especially if you take the time to annotate it with projects, promotion, and other events.
- I've definitely been most happy in highly collaborative, autonomous group environments, where we've been able to support each other and recognition has followed in the way of review or promotion. That's hardly unique or insightful, though, is it? π€
- Enroute to the office for the first time in 452 days, very early morning, I was bounced by a train guard into paying another Β£108 for a new ticket. Despite having the right ticket/credentials on me already. I think it was the end of their shift. We were both tired, I was being slow, they were being ruthless. I should have been angry, and am now, but was confused and simpering at the time. π₯Ί
- Being in the office is nice. Social skills need rebuilding though. Rowan: βYouβre real!β Lee: βI know!" π I loved going for lunch and gathering a little group outside a pub after work.
- Everyone should have a fancy toilet with various seat options and built in bidet, like we have in the office.
- The eco friendly, gentle deodorant I've been using during the pandemic had its first major challenge. I think it may have failed. Colleagues, let me know.
- Office gossip is valuable, and has been lacking. Still waiting on juicy gossip to return, like "doesn't Lee smell now?" I'm bad at gossip, all take-take-take.
- I miss London.
- I love Sheffield.
- Franco Manca is a safe, delicious choice. But too efficient. You can't pass time there. π
- Teens are snogging in gross corners near train stations again. Nature is healing.
- We're using the wrong metric to monitor site bundle size.
*The life of Lee, sanitised somewhat for an unknown audience of family, friends, enemies, colleagues, colleagues who are friends, colleagues who are enemies**, internet randos, internet randos who could be friends, internet randos who could be enemies.
**I have no colleague enemies really. Or, do I?
